Beautiful Bugs

Luke Jerram’s biomedical glass pieces are objects of beauty despite their unsavoury subject matter. Based on microscopic images of killer viruses, he worked with skilled glass blowers and Bristol University virologists, to create a series of translucent interpretations of these commonly feared diseases.

Topical, given the current pandemic of swine flu and ongoing battles against HIV, the collection also includes such renowned celebrities as SARS and avian flu, with a token E.coli bacteria thrown in for microbial balance.

The location of the gallery also seems fitting for sculptures of swine flu – tucked between St Barts hospital and the pig carcasses of Smithfield meat market. Well displayed, with lightbox plinths illuminating the work to reveal the intricate details on the inside of the glass. I’d happily take the whole horrible lot home with me. But beware – these pieces are as delicate as they are deadly. Defintely ones to be handled with care.
